[Beijing, China, May 10, 2022] China Telecom and Huawei held a joint press conference today to launch their new Super TimeFreq Folding technology for 5G-Advanced networks. At the conference, Gan Bin, Vice President of Huawei Wireless Solution, delivered a keynote speech titled "Continuous Innovation, Lighting Up the Future of Digital Intelligence" where he explained how, "China Telecom and Huawei have continuously made breakthroughs in uplink capability, which has achieved Gbps uplink through innovations such as Super TimeFreq Folding — a technology that helps build 5.5G "1+1+N" networks to deepen the transformation to a digital and intelligent society."

As the popularity of applications such as XR and 3D AI have soared in recent years, requirements for uplink capacity have also increased. A 1+1+N deployment approach for 5.5G requires networks be able to support millisecond-level latency while providing ubiquitous Gbps uplink and 10 Gbps downlink. China Telecom and Huawei have decided to work together to break through the bottlenecks preventing customers from achieving these uplink speeds.

During the earliest years of 5G development, China Telecom and Huawei jointly proposed a new 7:3 timeslot configuration to enhance uplink experience. More recently, China Telecom and Huawei sought to further improve uplink capacity by launching the Super Uplink and Super Frequency Fusion technologies to fully utilize FDD spectrum and C-band TDD spectrum coordination. Together, these technologies have already improved uplink experience by three times.

As 5G moves onto sub-100 GHz bands, China Telecom and Huawei have looked for new ways to fully leverage the TDD spectrum, which provides ultra-large bandwidth. Super TimeFreq Folding is the result of their research. It uses TDD dual-carrier time-domain folding and complementation technology to allow all timeslots to be used for uplink transmission. It also allows high bandwidths to be utilized for both uplink and downlink, improving uplink capabilities to Gbps-levels while reducing latency to less than 4 ms.

These releases have helped enhance uplink capability significantly and the core technologies of these "Super" solutions have been incorporated into 3GPP specifications, allowing them to play a bigger role in the maturation of the device, network, chip, and industry application ecosystems. This will, in turn, accelerate the commercial use of uplink capabilities.

Gan Bin concluded his keynote saying, "Ubiquitous Gbps-level uplink is important for 5.5G's '1+1+N'. We will continue to work with China Telecom and other industry partners to continuously innovate and upgrade mobile network capabilities, to achieve the vision of changing society with 5G."
